Puppy Love thank Channel Five for letting us screen these reports so that more people maybe made aware of the cruelty of puppy farms.
Part 1.
Part 2.
Investigations into sick and dying pups lead us once again back to Carmarthenshire to check out premises of breeders who's pups had either been very, very ill or had died before reaching 9 months of age.
The licensed breeding establishments you see on the film are just two of many we have complaints against. Its almost a year since we were there last and despite concerns being raised it seems nothing has changed for the better.
As you can see the dogs don't look in the best condition which is hardly surprising when they have no exercise or comfortable quarters in which to live. Most of the time they are in semi darkness and some are in solitary confinement for years on end . This is very stressful for a dog who is a pack animal and the stress takes its toll on physical health.
Matted coats are uncomfortable and sawdust and wood chipping are irritants.
On closer inspection of dogs we found rotten teeth, conjunctivitis, infected ears running with pus and mammary gland infections . All these ailments have been untreated for years ,can you imagine the pain and discomfort ? Bitches are still expected to produce pups on every season regardless of their health, is it any wonder pups are ill?
Carmarthen council have licensed these premises for years , they inspect the building and have no concern whatsoever for the well being of the dogs incarcerated inside. What does that tell you about animal welfare concerns in Wales.
We have been to many licensed puppy farms in Camarthenshire and have witnessed the conditions these dogs are kept in, we have taken video and pictures and asked the council to respond but Mr Davis head of public protection refuses to accept they have a problem even when dogs lack basic requirements for life like water !! Carmarthen council as a whole refuse to answer our emails, can public servants pick and choose what questions they answer and who they answer ?
From what we have witnessed especially on working farms any old shed/ barn will do, these dogs spend their lives in dark ,dingy buildings with no outdoor runs or exercise given, the lucky ones get cleaned out once a day and fed and watered and that is it. The farmers seem to think this is acceptable, the dogs and puppies being treated as they would their livestock in fact their livestock probably gets treated better as most are out on fields. The consequence of this is puppies are unsocialised the adult dogs are often bred from until they can breed no more, illness left untreated as going to the vets cost money. The puppy farmers sit at the bottom of the chain, it is the pet shops and the dealers who are making thousands at little expense to themselves.
There are also the big puppy farms often owned by English who bought up land in Wales when it was much cheaper there than in England with the sole purpose of taking advantage of Camarthenshire total indifference to puppy farming and their obvious inability to deal with the situation.
We suggest that every puppy farm in CAMARTHENSHIRE would be in breach of the animal welfare act in some way.
Puppy Love would like to thank Y Byd ar Bedwar and S4C for allowing us to use this programme to educate more people to the horrors of puppy farming .
