Iron Man 3 digitally removed a Guy Pearce beard

According to WETA Workshop visual effects supervisor Sean Walker, Guy Pearce had to have his beard digitally removed while filming for Iron Man 3.

According to WETA Workshop Visual Effects Supervisor Sean Walker, Guy Pearce had to have his beard digitally removed during the shoots to iron man 3. Pearce starred in Marvel Studios’ conclusion Iron Man trilogy as the leader of the evil scientific think tank AIM. Pearce has starred alongside Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall.

After having his business proposal rejected and left behind by Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) on New Year’s Eve 1999, Pearce’s Aldrich Killian set out to destroy everything he held dear. Not only did Killian create a scientific think tank to compete with Star Industries by investing in projects that Tony neglected, but he also began funding a cell of the Ten Rings organization to advance his own arms race, calling himself the Mandarin while hiding behind a stand-in. While Killian was quickly dispatched and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings overhauled the Ten Rings and Trevor Slattery (Kingsley), a Marvel VFX supervisor has shared a surprising secret behind the character’s final moments.

Speaking to Wren Weichman and Niko Pueringer from Corridor Crew YouTube, Walker revealed that Pearce needed his appearance digitally altered. Walker explained that when Pearce returned to production for pickup shoots, he had grown a beard for other productions he was working on, causing a problem for Marvel Studios. In order to fix the problem, the studio suggested sticking on his beard, before removing visible facial hair with digital effects. Walker admitted that ultimately they opted to use a numerical model from Pearce. Check out the exchange below.

Sean Walker- So, this all here, Guy Pearce was on new shows, he had a half beard, and the thought that it might help if they glued his beard to his face.Wren Weichman- What?! Wait wait? So you say it was a pickup, but he was already on another project? It’s kind of like a Superman mustache storyline here. And they’re like… ‘Okay, so we’re going to have to paint this beard, so it would help if we just reduced the outline of the beard by pasting it on his face.’ ?Niko Pueringer – Did this help?Walker – Nope… He’s a fully digital character…yes, 100%.”

Iron Man 3 Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian Damaged Extremis

Henry Cavill infamously had his mustache digitally removed during the 2017 production Justice Leagueas the actor demanded during filming Mission Impossible: Fallout, causing problems with Warner Bros. when Cavill was invited back for numerous occasions under Joss Whedon. The result saw the studio’s attempts to improperly remove Cavill’s facial hair become the subject of ridicule upon the film’s release, due to Cavill’s eerie digital upper lip valley appearance. Footage from Whedon’s reshoots that involved Cavill’s digitally altered portrait was not reused for original director Zack Snyder’s 2021 revamped cut of the film.

While Marvel has received its own VFX reviews in recent years, the studio has always been able to create memorable visuals and creations through digital effects. While Walker indicates that Pearce’s digital facial hair removal was not part of the final cut of iron man 3, the studio has a habit of subtly adjusting scenes through digital effects to maintain consistency. While it’s a small change that many wouldn’t notice unless they know about it, it’s a good example of the care the studio can take with its continuity in most cases.
