After Sushmita suffered a herniated disc in 2006, her fitness regime changed. “Forbidden to work out and do a lot of other things, I ended up with tons of weight,” she said India time. “I could have complained about back pain for the rest of my life or done something about it.” It was then that she began her practice. “AS is a mix of yoga, dance, ballet and one of the most disciplined martial arts, Kallaripayatu. It’s now part of my daily training and on the days I don’t, I stretch. They give me a blood rush to stay charged throughout the day and keep my skin glowing. Because you’re using your own body weight, every muscle is working, leaving you feeling toned,” she said, adding that she loves the “meditative feel” it gives her. “You must have the ability to lift your full body weight to perform it – it comes with practice. Beginners find it difficult and should start slowly, but really anyone can do it, and once you’re there, it’s pure happiness.”
“My training keeps changing during the week,” Sushmita added to The Times of India. “It alternates between internal training – walking, running, jumping rope and strengthening. I don’t like the idea of training for hours, but keeping my body active from head to toe works. I’m not enthusiastic about bodybuilding like I was earlier.” According to her trainer, Nupur Shikhare, when she does weight training, she trains four times a week for two hours per session. “She is currently working on bodyweight training and flexibility. Mobility is another key area you will find her focused on: core strengthening, head to toe mobility and shoulder rotations are a feature important part of his diet,” he told Vogue.
